Help/Tips???

So, we are looking to refinish our kitchen table. I can't bear to get rid of it since it is the table and hutch that I grew up with. Does anyone know how to do this? It has a formica top to it. I am wanting to sand it all down and make the top lighter and then the bottom black. Right now it's just too dark in our kitchen plus we do need to get all new chairs when we are finished with it. Any tips or suggestions would be helpful since we have never done something like this.

We wanted to refinish an older veneer dresser, and ran into the same problem. I have heard of a liquid sandpaper that people have used on formica. I don't think all formica is "created equal", so I'm not sure if it would work on your table or that you would even care for the results. I think the recommendation is more of painting. We painted our ladder back chairs about a year ago and after we painted them, I put two or three coats of polyurethane on top of it (spray can type) and they still look like new. No chipping or anything. Maybe something like this would work for your table. I believe Formica can be replaced. You may be able to take your table top to a woodworking place and see if they can cut you a new top and/or edge.

Hi ya! Unfortunately I do not know anything of the sort. ;-) I did want to leave you a note telling you that I was thinking of you today and praying for you. Hope and pray all is well and you are feeling great!

Hi Christina,

How are you? I realize this is a very delayed response to your post. You have probably already gotten this taken care of, but if not, let me know. I have a new coworker who likes to refinish furniture in her spare time. She has made a little side business of it! I could ask her about it, if you still need suggestions.

Take care! :-)
